What the market says

"A 15% day gives some back tomorrow."

The pattern, as the memory screens it: s.intraday_pct >= 15, liquid names ($50M traded on the anchor day, above $5), 2019 to the latest close. A name that is normally thin can qualify on a spike day, so the instances lean toward the names that spike. Questions this lesson answers:

What the charts did

More of them gave some back the next session than on an ordinary day: 58% of 6,795 closed below the anchor, against 49% of ordinary days. Median next-session move -2.0%.

A week on, 39% were above the anchor, fewer than the 55% of ordinary days; median -4.9%, and the middle 80% ran from -30.5% to +24.0% (ordinary: -6.1% to +6.8%).

A month on, 40% were above the anchor, fewer than the 53% of ordinary days; median -7.6%, and the middle 80% ran from -49.2% to +38.8% (ordinary: -12.6% to +13.5%).

Three months on, 37% were above the anchor, fewer than the 54% of ordinary days; median -16.8%, and the middle 80% ran from -67.6% to +60.8% (ordinary: -19.9% to +24.8%).
